Pacific Northwest Trip: Next Stop Yakima

Yakima, often called the "Palm Springs of Washington," is a medium-sized town located east of the Cascades and close to the Yakama Nation. This area is known for its expansive agriculture, producing hops, apples, cherries, and wine grapes. During our visit, we explored this semi-arid region's scenic landscapes and beautiful spots in the Cascade Mountains, less than an hour's drive from Yakima. We also visited neighboring areas such as Toppenish (but not the Casino) and the Yakama reservation.

Backyard View

The house where we stayed in Yakima had a great view from the backyard deck. Yakima is situated east of the Cascades.

Clear Lake with trees on the other side of the lake.

Clear Lake

We spent part of the day driving east from Yakima into the Cascade Mountains. After driving just an hour west, we observed a dramatic change in the terrain and vegetation.

This image was taken at the Mt. Rainier - Goat Rocks Viewpoint. I don't know if it was taken toward Mount Rainier, Ives Peak, or Gilbert Peak.

Yakima Valley Museum

This was a smaller yet enjoyable museum featuring intriguing exhibits, including one at the entrance that showcases a petrified forest unearthed on a farm in the valley.

This area is semi-arid; therefore, the vegetation is significantly different from that of Seattle.

Driving from Clear Lake to a viewpoint overlooking the lake, we spotted another spectacular waterfall. This image captures only the rocky crest of the waterfall.

A short distance from Yakima, in the town of Toppenish, sits this museum. Some nicely restored cars are located in the train yard, while several vehicles await restoration.

Yakama Cultural Center

Despite my somewhat bewildered expression, this museum, though a bit small, offers a glimpse into the Yakama Nation's history and culture. It is worth a visit.

Like the previous image, we can now see Mount Rainier in the distance.

Clear Creek Falls Overlook

Shifting the camera (phone) to the horizon, we had a scenic view across the valley formed by Clear Lake.

Yakima Rainbow

A light rain in the distance, combined with the sun at the right angle, created this lovely rainbow above Cowiche Canyon Trail.

Yakima Arboretum

The Arboretum is a large park that includes various garden areas, one of which is depicted in this image. From the Arboretum, we walked to the Yakima River and along the Greenway.
