Mt Cook/ Tasman Glacier

A simplified map of New Zealand shows the major cities visited on our trip. Our fifth stop, Mount Cook, is highlighted.

We were driven from QT to Mt. Cook and stayed at the Hermitage. Having been disappointed by the tourist trap of Milford, it initially felt as though the Heritage might be a disappointment, but despite the popularity of this destination, the hotel was well equipped with nice restaurants, excellent rooms, and well-coordinated tours (of which we did the Tasman Glacier boat tour.

On the drive to Mount Cook, we stopped briefly at the south end of the lake. This shot is looking north toward Mt. Cook.

The mountains to the left of the lake rise quickly from the water.

The next day, we departed for Christchurch. During our journey, we passed several scenic areas. This church is located on the shore of Lake Tekapo, in the town of the same name.

View from Our Hotel Room

This hotel was built to give the most rooms the best view, and they did a good job.

First look at the Glacier

The glacier is dirty black because it picks up rocks, & pebbles as it moves.

It's a bit of a hike from hotel to Tasman Lake, and this is a shot from the trail approaching the lake. Those mountains behind the lake . . . . Wow!

Closer to Tasman Glacier

This is as close as we can get. The glacier extends outward under the water a few hundred yards, so the boats don't get too close to it.

Continuing the drive to Christchurch, we passed many farms. Usually, they're very green, but not as much during our trip due to a drought.
